OPENING OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR FOR THE 101st ISSUE ALUMNI OF MU-SOFIA

The official start of the academic year 2018/2019 at the Medical University of Sofia was given on September 10th in the renewed audience of SABALAG “Maichin Dom (Mother’s Home)”. The ceremony was attended by the new Deputy Minister of Education and Science Karina Angelieva, the Chairman of the Board of Rectors Prof. Lyuben Totev, the Chief Secretary of the Bulgarian Medical Association- Stoyan Borisov, directors of university hospitals, teachers, students and freshmen.

In his address to the 101st issue of Alumni of MU-Sofia, Rector of the University Prof. Victor Zlatkov announced that at the moment for the new academic year 5105 young people applied for all specialties of the University, while maintaining the extremely high minimum admission score. 2910 people attended the specialties in medicine, dental medicine and pharmacy. The preliminary ones – 1568 and the regular ones – 1342. The candidates for the PHF are 843, for the Filaretova College – 559, and for the branch “Prof. Eve. Mitev “Vratsa – 106. The foreign applicants are 687, 531 of them for medicine, 124 for dental medicine and 32 for pharmacy. The statistics show that in most disciplines the competition is 5 to 1, and for some it is 7: 1.

In this regard, the Rector pointed out that the University of Sofia, with its 100-year history, is the higher education institution, which has won a leading position in our society, thanks to its well-trained staff and significant achievements in the educational, scientific and medical activity.

Evidence of this is the data from the rating charts of the MES, where during all 7 years of their conducting, MU-Sofia is an absolute leader and leads in all five areas of medical education – medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy, health care and public health.

The contribution to this is the attraction of external funds for international projects with various institutions, which in the last year amounted to over BGN 1,2 million. The volume and quality of the equipment purchased, mainly for the needs of the University Hospitals of the Faculty of Medicine, are worth over BGN 8.5 million.  And in fulfillment of the goals of the investment program, the opening of the new material and technical base of the University in Vratsa Branch, as well as the completely renovated hall of University Hospital  “Maichin Dom” -Sofia create excellent conditions for a new quality of the educational process and scientific activities.

This year’s exam campaign has shown seven complete excellence marks . These are Aileen Musova, Vanessa Georgieva, Lyuliana Gineva, Nia Chakarova, Denislav Stanchev, Christian Stoichkov, all from the specialty “Medicine” and Vladislav Ivanov from the specialty “Dental Medicine”. They received congratulations from the rector and a gift – a stethoscope and blood pressure monitor.

Another student was honored during the ceremony – fifth-year student from the Faculty of Dental Medicine Marina Miteva, who this year won first place at the prestigious Robert Frank Award – Junior Congress in London. She received the academic badge of the university and a cash prize of 1000 BGN.

The new Deputy Minister of Education and Science Karina Angelieva also gave a greeting to the medical students. In her speech, she stated that the ministry would make the necessary efforts to double and triple the opportunities for the development of scientific projects in the context of European cooperation under the Horizon 2020 program. “Because the leading research development missions in the new framework program to be negotiated are precisely in the fields of health sciences, e-Health and all other areas related to human health, aging and demographic issues,” the deputy added. The deputy minister. Angelieva encouraged students and faculty, as well as young researchers to support the university through national policies and tools for developing quality of education and research. She wished them to be healthy, resourceful, ambitious, creative and to seek the support of their teachers, who have contributed with their enormous work and personal mission to the prestige of the oldest medical university in our country.

The President of the Council of the Rectors, Prof. Lyuben Totev, wished the freshmen at the largest and most distinguished medical university health, success and boldness. On behalf of the Chairman of the Bulgarian Medical Association, Dr. Ivan Madzharov, the Secretary General Dr. Stoyan Borisov, welcomed the young colleagues, who also announced the new initiatives of the Union to stimulate their training.
