Academician Prof. Vladimir Ovcharov was awarded Honorary sign “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”

Academician Prof. Vladimir Ovcharov was awarded by the President Rumen Radev Honorary sign “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”- a necklace for contribution to the development of medical science and education in Bulgaria.

The President awarded the highest state honors to five other distinguished Bulgarians at a ceremony at the Coat of Arms.

An indication for the vitality of our nation is the success at world level, which have been achieved by prominent Bulgarians, distinguished today with the state honors. This is what President Rumen Radev said during the award ceremony.

Academician Ovcharov is a Professor of Anatomy, Histology and Cytology at the Medical University of Sofia, and has been teaching at Bulgarian and foreign higher medical schools for 49 years

He has won numerous awards, diplomas and certificates for his research activities and contributions to the development of medicine. He was twice elected Doctor of the Year by the Bulgarian Medical Association – in 2003 and 2007 for merits in the field of medicine.

He is the recipient of the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal of the Albert Schweitzer World Academy of Medicine. In 2014, he was selected as the Doctor of Southeastern Europe by The Southeast European Forum, and in 2018 he was awarded the Ave vitae of the International Public Health Coordination Committee of the Eurasian Medical Association.

In his professional development, Academician Ovcharov does research in various fields – neurobiology, neuromorphology, development and sexual differences of the central nervous system, cell biology, cell membranes, cardiovascular system, motor apparatus.

In addition to his scientific achievements, Academician Ovcharov also contributed to the development of academic structures, with the Faculty of Public Health at the Medical University of Sofia and the Department of Linguistic Training and Student Sports, being established on his initiative.

Academician Ovcharov has held senior positions in institutions of higher education and a number of Bulgarian and international scientific organizations – Head of Department, Rector of the Medical University – Sofia, 1999 – 2008, Chairman of the Bulgarian National Academy of Medicine, Chairman of the Bulgarian Anatomical Society and others.
