A NEW SUCCESSFUL HEART TRANSPLANTATION

Our colleagues at St. Catherine University Hospital, an integral part of Medical University – Sofia, have performed another successful heart transplant. Under the leadership of Prof. Gencho Nachev, the hospital’s executive director, the multidisciplinary team succeeded in replacing the artificial heart of a 31-year-old man who for years compensated for severe heart failure. The patient became a donor to a 41-year-old woman with a ruptured brain aneurysm and brain death. It is important to note the careful and timely work of the team of the Military Medical Academy who prepared the donor for exploration. In the last few years, it is reported that this is the ninth patient to have a successful heart transplant after a pre-implanted artificial heart. The academic community of the Medical University – Sofia congratulates the team at the University Hospital “St. Ekaterina” for another great success of the leading cardiac-surgical hospital in Bulgaria. The dreams of students and the quality of medical education are more achievable and more impressive when seen in clinical practice.
